Stigma

2020-08-19

This post is a continuation of the previous one…misunderstandings about bipolar disorder that I’ve experienced myself personally.  Or that I’ve heard about from others and/or seen them happen to other people firsthand.

Misunderstanding #3:  Lazy = depressed
There are times in my life when I’m lazy.  Sometimes I just feel like laying on the couch and watching a movie or two.  Or mindlessly surfing the internet.  Or…you get the picture.  I’m pretty sure that most of you can relate – maybe even you are lazy at times!  There have been times in my past when I’ve been lazy that I’ve had some people assume that I’m depressed.  Just because I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder does not mean that I’m depressed if I’m being lazy!  Why is it okay for a “normal” person to be lazy, but not for someone diagnosed with bipolar disorder or depression?  We are all human, and most people I know veg out sometimes.  That’s okay!  With our increasingly busy and hectic world I personally see it as a good thing to simply take it easy once in a while.
